3G Mobile Broadband
Many people ask what 3G broadband is, or what it means. 3G gets its name as it is the 3rd generation of mobile technology (the second generation of mobile technology was called 2G)
3G is a name used in the telecoms industry for a service that allows mobile access to the internet, and allows you to get broadband on the move. 3G is the network you connect to, rather than the traditional BT or other telecom provider network. This allows you to browse through internet pages, download content such as videos, music and other documents without being restricted to a fixed line broadband connection or a Wi-Fi hotspot. This is subject to you being within the mobile network coverage area, in the same way that your mobile phone can only get a signal where there is coverage. You can find that many mobile Broadband providers will allow you to check coverage, and before you sign up you can often find the areas of the UK which a provider covers on their website. 3G was once only available to owners of more expensive mobile handsets such as Blackberry devices, but now more and more mobile manufacturers are equipping their devices with 3G functionality. There are still a number of issues with mobile broadband and 3G services, such as the lack of coverage in certain areas, high power usage as well as the limited download allowances provided by some mobile broadband providers (These are discussed further in our other help guides including the advantages and disadvantages of mobile broadband) . Even after considering these factors, 3G networks are increasing in popularity at an accelerated rate. The number of companies providing mobile broadband is increasing all the time and now includes, 3 Mobile Broadband, T-Mobile, 02, Orange and Vodafone. To get broadband on the move (wireless broadband available on the go) all you need to do is sign up to a mobile broadband package and you will be sent dongle, which you plug into your laptops USB port and then away you go. |
